Short answer:

The goal of a goal is not to get but to grow.

Generally, there are three types of goals:

Type A

A goal that you know how to get it.

It is when you already did the same thing. For example, you already bought an ordinary car. If you define a goal to buy another ordinary car, you exactly know how to achieve it.

Type B

A goal that you think you know how to get it.

Imagine you decide to buy a house. It is usually a big decision for most people. So, they think if I get a mortgage from a bank, use my saving, and borrow some money from my parents, then I will be able to buy my target house. However, it is defined by your current circumstances and you are limited to just thinking inside the boundaries of your logical possibilities.

Type C

A goal that you don’t know how to get but is your dream and you truly desire it.

Every single person has infinite power in their spiritual DNA and the aim of life is to expand and develop it. Imagine a goal of being a professional Ted talk speaker. You admit that every single individual can be a professional Ted speaker. But, why are there limited people of it?

The reason is either not all people desire to be a Ted speaker or they don’t put enough energy and focus on it to develop this skill.

The way of defining a C-Type goal

First, use your imagination faculty to decide on what you really want regardless of your current results or circumstances. Ask yourself if there weren’t any limits, what goal would I choose?

Imagination is the most marvelous miraculous inconceivably powerful force that the world has ever known. So, use it deliberately in favor of yourself. Fly it consciously to far places.

Everything that you want to have in your life is created in two states. First, it should be created in your mind through the usage of your imagination and then by giving appropriate energy to it throughout the impregnation period, it will be manifested in the physical world.

In defining a C-Type goal, you shouldn’t think of “HOW”. It is not your work. The HOW will be shown to you throughout the way. Indeed, it is your spirit’s duty and it knows far better than you about HOW and you just need to trust it. Your only duty is to think if you are truly willing to have it. You will attract all the things and the resources through the way to achieve the goal.

As you can see, C-Type goals are the ones that enforce you to think outside the boundaries of your logical possibilities. You know what? The real growth and quantum leap reside here.

Indeed, the main purpose of this goal type is not to achieve it but what type of person you would become by getting it.

So, I do want to encourage you to change your way of viewing goals and consciously seek out if there is any opportunity for growth in every goal that you choose. If there isn’t any, maybe you need to revise your goal.


Goals in the Scrum world

In the Scrum world, a goal binds and unifies the team members as a single identity. It brings focus and coherence to the team encouraging them to collaborate. In addition, it provides flexibility about the way of moving toward the goal.

There are three levels of goals in the Scrum world.

Product Vision

It is the ultimate state of the product and a dot in the far future working as a north star. It gives direction to your high-level decisions.

Product Goal

It describes the future state of the product which can serve as a target for the Scrum Team. When you have a Product Vision, you can see the Product Goals as mid-term goals and steps toward the Product Vision.

Sprint Goal

It is the single objective for the Sprint and provides flexibility to negotiate the scope of the work within the Sprint if needed. Moreover, it brings coherence, helps Developers remain focused, and gives a reason to Developers to collaborate.

Matching goal types and levels

Now I want to match those three types of goals with the three levels of goals in the Scrum world.

Sprint Goal: choose B-Type or A-Type goals for

Product Goal: choose C-Type or B-Type goals for

Product Vision: choose C-type goals for
