Scrum itself is a framework, a way of working, which gives structure to people’s relationships and interactions.

But, first people should have SOMETHING in themselves to transfer through their relationships and interactions with others to make their collaboration meaningful.

This SOMETHING is called “ATTITUDE”.

Every team member has an attitude defining their way of being in the Scrum Team. The question is if it is a constructive attitude or not.

Let me bring the definition of the attitude.

ATTITUDE is the composition of our way of thinking, feeling, and acting.

The picture contains a great simple figure called “Stick Person” to help us understand how our mind works. It was first developed by Dr. Thurman Fleet in 1934.

It has three parts as follows:

Conscious Mind:

This is where we think. It has the ability to reject or accept ideas and thoughts. It is the intellectual part of our mind. It can originate accepted ideas by constantly thinking of them.

Subconscious Mind:

This is where our beliefs and habits reside. It is our emotional mind. The wonderful fact of it is that it can only accept ideas and has no ability to reject them. It is like a garden. Whatever you plant in it, will grow. No matter if, it is sweet fruit or weed.

It believes everything that the conscious mind tells it. The more an idea is repeated, the deeper it is placed into the subconscious mind. These repeated ideas become our beliefs about ourselves and the world we live in. It expresses those beliefs as vibrations through our feelings and actions.

Body:

It is a small part of our being and is the instrument of our mind to take action.

These three parts together create our results. Be aware that our results always tell the truth. So, be honest with yourself. Are you satisfied with your results? Or do you see a need for improvement?

The good news is that we can change our attitude toward a constructive one. How?

By increasing our awareness of how our mind works through study and leveraging it through repetition.

Now, ask yourself

1- Am I choosing constructive thoughts in my conscious mind or do I allow all types of thoughts without any filtering to come into my mind?

2- Am I repeating enough to plant constructive behavior in my subconscious mind?

3- Am I acting based on constructive behaviors coming from my subconscious mind?

4- Are my conscious mind, subconscious mind, and body in harmony to create a constructive attitude?

Think of it. It is a game-changer. The professional attitude is the foundation of the success of the Scrum Team.

It is a vast and deep knowledge. I have heavily invested in it to increase my awareness of why people behave in certain ways.

It has created a belief in me that without a constructive attitude, having a successful Scrum Team is just an illusion. If you already saw a successful team, I am sure that they have created a constructive attitude either consciously or unconsciously. However, the interesting aspect is that it is teachable.
